The Chrome extension

To provide Smooth Mode, ChatSmoother reads and processes the ChatGPT conversation you are viewing in your browser. This includes the conversation’s user messages and assistant responses, the ChatGPT page and rendered content, conversation and message identifiers, the current ChatGPT URL or route, and matching ChatGPT conversation-history request URLs. ChatSmoother uses this information to identify complete turns, maintain the History window you selected, show older turns on request, and restore the conversation view after navigation or reload.

This processing occurs locally in your browser. ChatSmoother does not upload conversation message content, ChatGPT URLs, conversation identifiers, extension settings, or extension telemetry to ChatSmoother-controlled servers. The extension contains no analytics or remote error-reporting service. Developer personnel cannot inspect your conversation content through the extension because the extension does not transmit it to ChatSmoother.

ChatGPT’s normal network traffic with OpenAI continues independently of ChatSmoother. The extension observes matching conversation-history responses already requested by the ChatGPT page and changes only the in-browser response presented to that page; it does not change the outgoing request or the conversation stored by OpenAI.

Extension data stored locally

ChatSmoother stores Smooth Mode status, the selected turn limit, settings version, per-conversation extra-turn choices, welcome and reminder state, and short-lived reload status in chrome.storage.local. It also uses the ChatGPT tab’s session storage for temporary navigation, reload, Show Older Turns, conversation-route, turn-index, timestamp, and scroll-restoration state. Some of this state includes a conversation identifier or route-derived key. ChatSmoother does not write conversation message content to Chrome storage or session storage.

The extension may locally observe clicks, limited keyboard input, wheel, touch, and scroll position to recognize navigation and to stop or restore Show Older Turns scrolling. It does not store raw event streams or typed message text.

Extension permissions

The extension uses Chrome storage for the local settings described above. When you open the toolbar popup, the activeTab permission lets it temporarily read the active tab URL so it can determine whether that tab is a supported ChatGPT page and direct messages or reload actions to that tab. Packaged content scripts run only on https://chatgpt.com/*.

Limited Use

ChatSmoother uses extension user data only to provide or improve its disclosed single purpose: maintaining a focused, user-selected history window in ChatGPT and restoring older or full history on request. ChatSmoother does not sell or transfer extension user data for personalized advertising, credit or lending decisions, data brokerage, or unrelated purposes. ChatSmoother’s use of extension user data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

The chatsmoother.com website

Website form submissions are separate from the Chrome extension’s local processing. The extension does not automatically submit these forms.

Early-access form

If you request early access, the website stores your email address, optional use case, source page, browser user-agent string, a salted one-way hash of the request IP address, and created and updated timestamps. The email and use case are used to manage and contact the early-access list.

Support form

If you contact support, the website stores your request type, email address, message, source page, browser user-agent string, a salted one-way hash of the request IP address, status, and creation timestamp. It may also store an extension version, browser, and operating system if those fields are supplied. Authorized personnel can read support submissions to respond. Please do not include private ChatGPT conversation content unless it is necessary for your request.

Cloudflare services

The chatsmoother.com website is delivered through Cloudflare’s network for traffic delivery, security, and abuse prevention. Cloudflare therefore receives ordinary request information such as the request IP address, requested URL, time, browser headers, and security signals, and may serve browser challenge code when needed.

Both forms also use Cloudflare Turnstile for anti-abuse verification. The pages load the Turnstile script from Cloudflare, and the browser communicates with Cloudflare to operate the widget. When a form is submitted, ChatSmoother sends the Turnstile response token and, when available, the request IP address to Cloudflare’s verification service. The ChatSmoother application database does not store the Turnstile response token or the raw IP address; it stores the salted hash described above. Separate website access and error logs may contain the raw request IP address as described below. Cloudflare handles data under its own privacy policy.

Server logs

The website server keeps access, error, and security-related logs to operate and secure the service, prevent abuse, and diagnose problems. These logs can include technical information such as the request IP address, date and time, requested path, response status, referrer, browser user-agent string, security information, and diagnostic error details. This logging is part of the website infrastructure and is not data collected by the Chrome extension.

Retention and deletion

Website form submissions are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to respond to the submission, provide requested support, maintain appropriate business records, operate and secure the service, and satisfy applicable legal or operational requirements.

You may request deletion through the support form. Identify the request as privacy-related and provide the email address used for the original submission so the request can be verified. After verification, ChatSmoother can delete applicable early-access and support records from the active website database.

Deletion from the active website database does not necessarily remove copies held in database, server-provider, or off-site backups. Those copies may remain until they are deleted or an applicable normal backup lifecycle expires. No specific backup retention period is promised. If a backup containing a record previously subject to a valid deletion request is restored to an active system, the applicable deletion should be reapplied where operationally appropriate.

Cloudflare, hosting providers, and other infrastructure or security providers process technical information under their own systems and retention practices. ChatSmoother does not control every provider-managed retention period. No specific provider retention period is promised here.

Analytics, accounts, and sales

The extension and website do not include ChatSmoother analytics or advertising trackers. You do not need a ChatSmoother account to use the extension or submit a website form. ChatSmoother does not sell extension data or website form submissions.

Privacy contact

For privacy questions about extension data or website submissions, use the support form and identify the request as privacy-related. Submitting that form creates a separate website support record as described above.
